âWhat the fuck was that?â I demanded, my lips still tingling from Tannerâs latest kiss.
We were both dressedâ¦but that was as far as weâd gotten. I couldnât even take a step away without Tanner tugging me back against him and kissing the hell out of me.
It was during kiss thirty-sevenâbut then again, who was counting? Certainly not me, because that would be weird, right?âthat we both heard the innocent, childlike laughter wafting from farther down the street.
My heart stumbled in my chest, an athlete tripping over the final hurdle, and Tannerâs hands on my waist became almost bruising.
âNothing good,â he murmured as he tugged me farther into the alcove created by the bookstoreâs awning.
We were positioned in such a way that the numerous streetlights couldnât quite reach where we stood, hiding us in the shadows.
And thank fuck for that, because only a second later, the mist gliding across the asphalt cleared and out stepped four figures.
Reapers.
That thought caressed the edges of my mind in a feather-like touch as cold fear skated down my spine and my hands began to shake.
The reapers gliding towards us almost looked like some fucked-up, macabre family. Two of them appeared older than the restâtowering over the groupâwhile the other two reminded me of children.
The Daughter had a mane of pitch-black hair almost the exact same shade as Josieâs and Aidenâs. However, streaks of silver were interwoven in the raven strands, the color turning molten in the flickering streetlights. She wore a gray pencil skirt and blazer that could best be described asâ¦business casual. Fuck, that was a weird description for a girl who was currently giggling, but it was the only one I could think to use. The blazer was buttoned all the way to her porcelain chin, and it conjured up images of white straitjackets and mental asylums. The similarly colored skirt swished around her legs as she skipped forward, still giggling manically.
On her face was a white, porcelain mask. Two pinprick black eyes rested where her normal eyes should be, making me wonder how she saw anything to begin with.
Then again, did it matter? This was Purgatory, for fuckâs sake.
Eyelashes framed those beady orbs, and pink eyeshadow decorated the porcelain surrounding it. She didnât have a nose, but the lips painted across the bottom of the mask were a bright, cherry red. The overall effect was eerie as fuck.
The boy at her side was slightly taller, giving me the impression he was the Brother. He, too, had ebony-colored hair, but while the Sister wore a skirt, he chose black slacks. The mask he wore had forgone the eyelashes, eye shadow, and lipstick smear, but somehow, that made it even more unnerving. Nothing but button-sized, black orbs stared back at me.
The final two members of their little fucked-up party were what I considered the Mom and the Dad. Tall, imposing, and nearly carbon copies of the two younger reapers, aside from the obvious height difference.
And all four of them were carrying weaponsâthe little girl
